March, the month of alarms!

Looking back at March, I think it might be one of the most exhausting months yet. With two weddings to shoot, printing and editing work to be done, add in a new job, SEMOA and only four weekends, I realized that every single day in March started with my alarm clock, err, phone I mean. No sleeping in, and no waking up later than 7:30am! Goodness… glad it’s April, and USA here I come!

Cyberview Spa…

Interesting SPA experience… everything was great except for the couples’ room is missing a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna! Big minus! Since no cameras or phones allowed in the Spa areas I’ve only the following lousy photos from my phone somewhere outside the Spa.

A thousand frames later…

Or 8,000 megabytes of RAW+JPEG frames…
Some lessons learnt:
-RAW works when light doesn’t
-Generation 3 IS really works
-Even with a 1.6x crop factor, you still need a 70-200 lens!
-Digital white balance (with RAW) is Godsend

DSLRs and pricing

Just had a discussion with a friend’s friend about getting a DSLR and the first complaint was that they cost so much more! In fact, he was just saying that for the price of the 30D you could have gotten something like an EOS-1 series film camera! Well, I admit that’s true but accounting for the cost of the sensor, processor, buffer memory and all the extra electronics, you are also paying probably for all your film in advanced! Well, let’s say you shoot fifty rolls of film a year, at RM50 per roll (including processing/printing), you’re looking at RM2500/year. In two years, that’s RM5,000 which is almost the price of a new 30D body today. Obviously heavy shooters make back the cost faster but no matter what, try including the cost of film and processing and you’ll realize that the DSLR you want isn’t exactly that expensive afterall…

Another milestone…

on the journey of life. It’s time to stop, think and take stock.
To appreciate our parents despite their many failings;
To thank people who have made an impact on our lives;
To love people and use things; (and not the other way around)
To remember friends no longer with us;
To accept the morons who show us how horrible humanity can be;
(without darkness how do you see the light?)
To be grateful for shared joys, pleasures and pains;
To pray for God is larger than all our problems put together.

So as I sit back at work, stuffed full from a hearty Korean lunch, thanks to everyone who sent wishes via email, sms, etc. I may not have globs of money, but I feel like a millionaire with all of you. You can’t buy true friendship and love so I’m thankful to God for each one of you and for the most special person on this earth. The best birthday gifts don’t come boxed and wrapped… xoxoxo

So much for the fourteenth…

Almost every news website I visit seems to have some an item about Valentines. The local florist here at SS2 jacked the price of sunflowers up like 33%. I wonder how many people are having dinner tonight, buying high-priced, fixed menus, splurging on chocolates and other fancy cuddlies in hope that they can score or end up in bed? Hmmm. Makes one wonder does it. Of course. Today, at work, a delivery guy came in with a bunch of flowers for a co-worker. Of course that was a nice touch no doubt. My gripe is more towards what’s so special about the fourteenth?

I don’t know about you, but is love all about having a great time, good food, flowers and chocolate? If you think that, then I think you’ll be terribly dissapointed. Love is not just an emotion, on the contrary. It is much more than that. It’s also committment and responsibility, honor and respect. Do you love someone more on their birthdays, anniversaries or valentine’s day? Love is 24×7, 365 days (plus leap year days too). You can go buy your flowers and chocolates if you want, me, I’m going to hug my baby and tell her that she’s the most amazing, delicious person on this earth and how much I love her. And I’ll be doing that more often than just valentine’s.

(BTW, Have you seen how your flowers will look after day four? And you know that chocolate, despite being food for love, will go to her hips? :D)
