Or 8,000 megabytes of RAW+JPEG frames…
Some lessons learnt:
-RAW works when light doesn’t
-Generation 3 IS really works
-Even with a 1.6x crop factor, you still need a 70-200 lens!
-Digital white balance (with RAW) is Godsend

Just had a discussion with a friend’s friend about getting a DSLR and the first complaint was that they cost so much more! In fact, he was just saying that for the price of the 30D you could have gotten something like an EOS-1 series film camera! Well, I admit that’s true but accounting for the cost of the sensor, processor, buffer memory and all the extra electronics, you are also paying probably for all your film in advanced! Well, let’s say you shoot fifty rolls of film a year, at RM50 per roll (including processing/printing), you’re looking at RM2500/year. In two years, that’s RM5,000 which is almost the price of a new 30D body today. Obviously heavy shooters make back the cost faster but no matter what, try including the cost of film and processing and you’ll realize that the DSLR you want isn’t exactly that expensive afterall…
No idea why but there’s like six weddings among the rest of my friends or friends’ siblings. Hmm, I wonder what’s the auspicious deal about March? Used to be February in 2002 just because of perhaps getting a 02-02-02 kinda of date… does 03-03-06 look good? or perhaps 06-03-06? Oh well…

Forked out over RM2K today.

First was the alternator on my truck decided to give up the ghost. That cost me RM200 for a new battery. Fine but then replacing the alternator cost something altogether different. Since I’ll be going to an Orang Asli village end of March for charity and all, I figured I’ll fix my erratic 4×4 transfer case which randomly decides to refuse to get into 4×4 mode or after a while stop sending power to the front wheels.
That kind of put a damper on my plans. I thought of buying myself a birthday pressie! Another red-ring! A lens that is. I’ve already sold my EF28-135 so I figured the EF24-105L will do nicely for my upcoming US trip and perhaps the wedding I’ve to cover first week of March. Shucks. To buy or not to buy?

Well, was mostly not feeling too good over the weekend and didn’t really get much done. Did manage to get quite a bit of sleep though. Anyways, as usual, pre-PMA news aside, there’s only two new Canon cameras launched that were of any interest to me. Surprisingly, not even their new DSLR, the EOS-30D. Obviously I’m waiting for a nice full-frame camera. The 5D is still a bit on the pricey side. The two interesting cams are the Ixus 800IS and the Ixus 630.
