WA Ajaxified!

I’ve been neglecting WebAperture for a bit but recently, a whole slew of changes and modifications have been deployed. For one thing, several functions and areas are now using the new fangled jargon of the web, “Web 2.0” or AJAX which allows a rich client functionality and doesn’t feel so disconnected. Most apparent to most will be the new Photographer’s Portraits options plus the new ShowImage. ShowImage is WA’s photo viewer and now at version 12.0, it has been significantly streamlined and enriched.

More features to come!

A Haven (not!)

Spent Saturday morning on a rather poorly run contest. The prizes are really good though.

Long term memory loss

In research independently commissioned, 63% of digital camera owners risk losing a lifetime of memories as they opt for saving images on a computer or printing images using an inkjet printer at the expense of obtaining true quality prints. For the 39% of those surveyed who rely on storing images on a PC there comes a strong warning from computer experts who pinpoint the potential risk of hardware failure and data loss. Computer consultant Adam Olliffe says: “The hard drive is a mechanical device prone to failure. Technology over recent years has concentrated on squeezing more and more data onto the same disk surface area.”
Adam Olliffe added: “When it does fail all data is then lost with no chance of retrieval. Businesses will always consider data backup as a crucial part of their IT infrastructure, however most home users will not address this issue until it is too late.” Alarmingly, 81% of those who regularly saved images on a PC did not have any form of back-up. A further concern is for the 24% of those surveyed who print images using an inkjet printer.
So, backup, backup, backup!

The Digital Camera problem…

Well, maybe not a problem in itself but more like the fact that we all like super saturated, high-fidelity color images that by default, most Digital SLRs don’t output that kind of result. What does one do? The easy answer is do it in post! (post-processing that is) Obviously much easier when the photo is shot in RAW mode.

The photo below illustrates. Although I did not have the original RAW image, I had the full-sized JPEG and all processing was mostly curves, saturation and the channel mixer.

Two new Canons

Looks like Canon decided to update two more models. The S5 which replaces the S3 was the eagerly expected cam for PMA back in Feb but looks like it slipped till May. Personally, nothing really exciting actually since I’m looking at getting the TX1 instead.
